Daedalus, an Athenian craftsman, attempted to escape with his son Icarus from his exile in Crete. King Minos, who commissioned the Labyrinth to imprison the Minotaur (half man, half bull), exiled them at the betrayal of giving Minos' daughter, Ariadne, a clue to the secret of the Labyrinth. Ariadne assisted Theseus, the enemy of Minos, in overcoming the challenge of the Labyrinth and in the defeat of the Minotaur.

Daedalus created two pairs of wings out of wax and feathers. Daedalus warned his son not to fly too close to the sun. Yet, the exhileration of flying overwelmed the caution, and as Icarus soared higher, the sun melted the wax that held his wings together. Icarus kept flapping his wings but with no feathers left, he was only flapping his bare arms. Icarus fell into the sea now named for him, the Icarian Sea near Icaria, an island southwest of Samos.
